Alberta’s first natural gas discovery was in Medicine Hat, when railroad workers drilling for water accidently hit methane. These postcard images are from these early days. The “Old Glory” well was drilled in 1909 and initially produced 4,500 Mcf/d of gas, a similar flowrate to the modern wells that are drilled today.
